What is the MYP Personal Project?

KIS International School

The Personal Project is the cumulative project of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) at KIS. On average, students spend 25 hours of independent learning on their projects as they explore a topic that really interests them. It is a core component of the International Baccalaureate and it represents a significant milestone in the journey of our MYP students.

When deciding on a theme, students consider their hobbies, talents, interests, dreams, loves, and passions. This year's projects included topics like creating a clothing brand and product prototype, developing a custom keyboard, performing music, cooking, and many more.

Want to see more? KIS Students created a short video to give you a glimpse into the topics they investigated.

Grade 10 students got extra creative this year in order to safely exhibit their projects to as many families as possible. By hosting a virtual showcase on a platform called Gather, hundreds of people attended the exhibition event, including guests from as far away as Australia.

Gather was so impressed with the KIS students that they will be featuring a story about our Personal Project Exhibition on their website.

Just like the MYP itself, the personal project encourages students to inquire, act and reflect!

  • Inquire
    • Explore an interest that is personally meaningful
    • Take ownership of their learning by undertaking a self-directed inquiry
  • Act
    • Apply Approaches To Learning (ATL) skills in pursuit of a learning goal and the creation of a product
  • Reflect
    • Reflect on the impact that the personal project has had on themselves and/or their community.

The personal nature of the project is important. It allows students to examine an area that motivates and interests them. The project provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and often creative product and demonstrate what they have accomplished in the MYP.

The aims of the MYP projects are to encourage and enable students to:

  • Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry
  • Generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation
  • Demonstrate the skills, attitudes, and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period
  • Communicate effectively
  • Demonstrate responsible action through learning
  • Set goals and choose how to achieve them.
  • Set goals and evaluate outcomes against them
  • Appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments

KIS is incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of our MYP students, especially given the challenges they have faced with COVID.

We know they will go on to achieve great things in the DP.
